Lauri Hämäläinen, a dedicated Finnish disc golfer, reflects on his roots and journey through one of the world’s fastest-growing sports. Raised in Hämeenlinna, Finland, Lauri discovered disc golf at the age of eight after a backyard game with a beach frisbee sparked his family’s interest in the sport. “My father…went to the store and got us different kind of discs,” he recalls. Lauri’s father soon began competing himself, bringing home victories that inspired Lauri to start competing too. “I was like, wow, I want to win too.”
For Lauri, training has become increasingly comprehensive over time. He reflects, “I actually gained like 20 kilograms in two years,” a transformation that has improved both his stability and performance. Building strength and precision is now central to his preparation. This offseason, he plans to focus on accuracy, especially putting, and improve his cardio. He understands that in sports, “If you’re fit, it helps,” highlighting that endurance and physical conditioning make a tangible difference, even in a sport requiring precision.
As disc golf has evolved, so has the gear. Lauri describes it as similar to traditional golf: “In disc golf, you have the putters, approach discs, mid-ranges, fairway drivers, and drivers.” Each disc has unique flight characteristics that impact distance, control, and stability. Reflecting on his recent season, Lauri shares that the courses can cater to different strategies and player strengths, like a course that “felt so easy” for him because of its long-distance throws. His strategy is also flexible: “You can literally be a stick, but you can be precise.”
Disc golf has always had a community-oriented spirit, but Lauri acknowledges that things are changing. “People were talking about disc golf spirit and how the sport is a gentleman’s sport,” he explains, describing the respect traditionally shown among players. However, the influx of new players during COVID-19 has shifted some dynamics. Lauri is hopeful about the sport’s future, even as it grows more competitive, and he stays grounded, choosing to avoid unnecessary drama.
Looking forward, Lauri has his sights set on competing in the United States, where prize money and competition levels are higher. “I’m dreaming of a trip to the US,” he says, though he notes the logistical and financial barriers. Traveling alone isn’t feasible, as players rely on groups to manage costs. However, Lauri remains determined to reach the US and represent Finnish talent on the international stage. With continued growth in his skills and a disciplined approach to training, he’s on a path to fulfilling this dream.
Lauri Hämäläinen’s journey in disc golf is a blend of passion, resilience, and aspiration. As he puts it, “I want to win something this season” – and his drive suggests he will keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
