Sustainable Athlete Valuation: How to Price Yourself Without Selling Yourself Short

What should I charge?

Wrong question.

Try this instead: “What am I worth?”

Not in followers. Not in likes. Not in vague “brand exposure.” But in value. In impact. In results.

Athletes—especially those in niche and emerging sports—have been playing the sponsorship game all wrong. You’ve been told to chase numbers that don’t matter. To be grateful for scraps. To take the first offer because “opportunities like this don’t come often.”

Nonsense.

The truth? You are a business.
The sponsorship money doesn’t go to the loudest athlete. It doesn’t go to the one with the most followers. It goes to the one who knows how to create business value.

So how do you figure out what you’re worth? By thinking like a business owner, not an influencer.

Rule #1: One Day Per Week. That’s It.

A sponsorship deal shouldn’t take over your life. You are an athlete first. A competitor, a professional, someone dedicated to mastery.

One day per week is the limit. That’s the time you should budget for sponsorship obligations—media shoots, activations, content, appearances. Any more than that, and you’re no longer an athlete with sponsors. You’re a spokesperson who happens to play sports.

This means that if you want sponsorship to replace a full-time salary, you need to charge at least five times your current daily earnings.

Not “whatever they offer.” Not “what feels fair.” 5x.

If you make €200 per day in your current work, your sponsorship value per day must be at least €1,000.

Why? Because you can only afford to commit one day per week—not five. Sponsorship isn’t your full-time job. It’s an investment of your limited time, and scarcity increases value.

Rule #2: Lowering Your Price Won’t Magically Get You a Deal.

There’s a lie that gets whispered in every athlete’s ear: “If you just price yourself a little lower, brands will say yes.”

It doesn’t work like that.

Sponsorship isn’t just about the check they write you. It’s about the time, energy, and resources the brand has to spend to make it work.

Your sponsor has to:

  • Get leadership buy-in.
  • Organize content production.
  • Involve their marketing team.
  • Coordinate activations.
  • Distribute and amplify the message.

You lowering your fee by 10% does nothing when their real cost is 20x that amount.

If they say no, it’s not about your price. It’s because they don’t see how you fit into their business strategy. It’s because they don’t understand your value.

Don’t discount yourself into oblivion. Make them see why you’re worth it.

Rule #3: Price is a Signal. Cheap Athletes Get Ignored.

A sponsorship deal isn’t about you. It’s about them.

If a brand can’t see how you help them solve a problem—sell more, engage employees, expand into a new market—they won’t sign the deal, no matter how cheap you are.

If you show up with confidence, if you price yourself correctly, you’re signaling one thing:

“I am not a random athlete hoping for a payday. I am a strategic partner who delivers results.”

And that? That’s priceless.

Your Next Step: Know Your Value, Don’t Guess It.

Most athletes undervalue themselves because no one taught them how to think like a business. The moment you shift from “I just need a sponsor” to “I am a brand partner who drives results,” everything changes.

Your pricing stops being a guess. It becomes a strategy. Your negotiations stop being desperate. They become confident.

Because when you know your worth, sponsorship stops feeling like charity.

And starts feeling like what it really is: a business deal where you are the asset.

But here’s the best part: You don’t have to figure it out alone.
