In the world of triathlons, few names are rising as quickly as Danyil Odynets. Born in Ukraine and now based in Austria, Danyil has carved out a name for himself through sheer determination, discipline, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. At just 23 years old, he’s already tackling some of the toughest races in the world, with his eyes now set on the Ironman competition in Taiwan this coming April. And beyond that? The Ironman World Championships – a dream he’s turning into a tangible goal.

In Episode 8 of The Stride podcast, Danyil gives listeners a rare glimpse into the life of a young triathlete on the rise. Hosted by JP, the episode dives deep into his mindset, his preparation, and his unwavering focus on the Ironman, where he’s chasing not just a finish but an all-new personal best.

“I’m aiming to push myself harder than ever,” Danyil says, his voice calm but determined. “My personal best for an Ironman is 8 hours and 12 minutes, but I know I can beat that.”

Training with Purpose

For those unfamiliar with the sport, an Ironman triathlon consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a full marathon run of 26.2 miles. It’s one of the most grueling tests of endurance and mental fortitude in athletics. But for Danyil, it’s more than just a race – it’s a measure of how far he can push the limits of his body and mind.

“I don’t just wake up and train,” Danyil explains in the interview. “Every session has a purpose. Whether it’s a long swim for endurance, a hard interval session on the bike, or hill sprints to build strength, everything is about fine-tuning for race day.”

His regimen is intense: six days a week of training, often clocking in multiple sessions a day. From early morning swims to late afternoon runs, his life revolves around his pursuit of perfection. And it shows. The 8-hour, 12-minute Ironman time he’s already posted is a testament to his dedication, but for Danyil, it’s not enough. Taiwan is his next chance to prove to himself – and the world – what he’s capable of.

The Mental Game

While physical fitness is essential for any triathlete, Danyil believes that what happens between the ears is just as important as what happens on the road, in the water, or on the bike.

“A lot of people don’t realize how mental this sport is,” he says. “You’re out there for hours, sometimes alone, battling your own thoughts. It’s easy to doubt yourself, to question if you have enough left to give. But the mental game – that’s where I think I’ve grown the most.”

Danyil credits his success in large part to meditation and visualization techniques. Before every race, he takes time to mentally prepare, walking himself through each stage of the event. “I see myself crossing the finish line before I even start. I see the transitions, I see the tough moments, and I see myself getting through them. That’s how I keep pushing.”

Nutrition: Fueling the Machine

For someone training at such a high level, nutrition plays a critical role. Danyil is meticulous about what he puts into his body, tailoring his diet to optimize performance and recovery.

“Food is fuel,” he says simply. “I eat a lot of lean proteins, complex carbs, and healthy fats. It’s all about balance, and knowing what works for your body. But I also listen to what my body needs. If I need more carbs one day, I’ll eat more. If I need rest, I’ll take it.”

He’s a strong believer in not overcomplicating his diet. “You don’t need to do anything extreme,” he laughs. “Just eat clean, train smart, and give your body what it needs.”

Looking to the Future

With the Ironman Taiwan looming, Danyil’s focus is sharper than ever. He’s hoping this race will be a stepping stone to the Ironman World Championships, an event he’s dreamed about for years. And with his current trajectory, it seems like only a matter of time before that dream becomes reality.

For now, though, Danyil remains grounded and focused on the task ahead. “It’s easy to get caught up in thinking about what’s next,” he says. “But I’m focused on the present – one race, one day at a time.”

As the episode wrapped up, JP had one final question for him: What’s driving you to push for the next level?

Danyil’s answer was simple, but powerful: “Because I know I can do better.”

With that mindset, there’s little doubt that Danyil Odynets is just getting started. Taiwan may be his next race, but for this young triathlete, the horizon is wide open – and he’s ready to conquer it.
