Legitimacy chain

The legitimacy chain is the sequence of institutional recognition that gives a practitioner-sport title its authority: the IOC, continental and national Olympic committees, the international federation (an IOC-recognised IF, ARISF member, or AIMS member), the national federation, and finally the title holder. A championship or record only carries weight to the extent the chain behind it is intact and recognised.
